Choosing the right format for your country
The biggest single mistake people make is sending the wrong style of CV rather than writing the wrong content. In the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, resumes are normally one to two pages, have no photo, no date of birth and no marital status — anti-discrimination practice makes recruiters uncomfortable with them, and many applicant tracking systems mis-parse the layouts that photos require. Use the American ATS or Modern template and leave the profile picture empty.
Across most of continental Europe the convention runs the other way. A photo is expected, a slightly longer document is normal, and language proficiency is usually listed explicitly. The European and Professional templates are built for that, with a dedicated photo area and a languages section.
